Compared to April, May was a fairly quiet month for the Million Dollar Niche Site Project.
But even though there was much less craziness, May came with a couple of pretty big milestones.
First, the site eclipsed $1,000 in revenue for the month – which is always a fun milestone to hit. This is by far the fastest I’ve ever gotten a site to the $1,000 revenue in a month threshold – this site is only 7 months old!
Second, and more importantly, the site was cash flow positive for the month of May. This is a HUGE milestone to hit and means that it will be even easier to invest more into content and link building in future months.
What Got Done This Month
- I wrote and posted 10 articles to the site, totaling 16,867 words
- I spent $1,000 on my managed link building campaign with The Hoth to acquire backlinks to my site
- I spent about 4-5 hours looking into and applying for new affiliate programs
I spent less time working on the project in May compared to the previous 6 months by a pretty wide margin. That’s a good thing! The end goal of this project is for it to be a hands off asset that puts money into my pocket every month and that is also sellable.
If the entire site revolves around me writing and devoting time to it, then I’m really just creating a job for myself.
That’s why getting to be cash flow positive is so big time. Especially for the next 6-12 months, I’ll be taking most of that profit and reinvesting it back into the business in the form of content (by hiring writers) and more backlinks.
New Affiliate Programs
I didn’t really know what to expect when I started researching into alternatives to the Amazon Associates affiliate program.
I mentioned last month that I promote a lot of products on my website for brands who have their own affiliate programs – so I spent some time applying for those programs and putting the new affiliate links into my website.
These programs were all on popular affiliate networks like Rakuten, Shareasale, Impact Radius, and Commision Junction.
And wouldn’t you know it, I got some pretty juicy commissions in only the first couple of weeks of putting in these new links!
I updated all of my old content with brand affiliate links throughout my site, where applicable, about halfway through May, so getting a few commissions in before the end of the month felt like a big win.
The really exciting part is that I earned about $140 on only TWO sales – the products I’m promoting are pretty expensive and also have a nice commission rate. So if I can scale up these referrals it could be a huge opportunity to bring in serious revenue for the site.
- Amazon US: $760.04
- Amazon UK: $19.44
- Amazon CA: $1.50
- Rakuten Affiliate: $68.10
- Shareasale: $74.62
- Ezoic: $352.31
Total Revenue: $1,276.02
As you’d expect, that big bump in revenue (especially considering the rate cuts that happened with the Amazon Associates program compared to April) was the result of the site skyrocketing up Google search rankings for lots of different keywords.
It got a little over 3 times the traffic in May compared to what it got in April, with no signs of slowing down as we head into the niche’s peak season.
Profit and Loss
This PnL is what you love to see! Most business ventures I get myself into take longer than 7 months to get cash flow positive, so I’m pretty happy with this one – and I don’t see any reason why the growth wouldn’t continue into future months.
May was a big time month, and I’m excited to see how we do during the next 3 months during my site’s niche’s peak season. Thanks as always for following along!
